How to plan your extra payments (pagas extra)

What to do with the June and December extra payments in Spain: how much they are net, why they can look smaller than expected and how to split them.

If you are paid in 14 payments, in June and December you receive a double payslip. Planned well, the extra payments (pagas extra) are your best savings tool.

How much they are net

On €30,000 gross in Cataluña with 14 payments, each payment, extras included, is about €1,649 net. The extra payment is not usually taxed more than the rest: withholding is worked out on the whole year.

If yours looks lower, your employer may have recalculated withholding that month, for example after a rise. See IRPF withholding on your payslip.

A simple split

  • Planned yearly costs: insurance, local taxes, school fees, holidays.
  • Savings: a share straight into your emergency fund or investments.
  • A treat: if your budget allows, better planned than improvised.

12 spread payments

If your employer spreads the extras, there are no double months: your monthly payslip already includes them. In that case, set aside yourself each month what you would put towards yearly costs. See the difference in 12 or 14 payments.

Combine it with your budget

Budget with the normal payment and keep the extras for what is not monthly. That way you do not depend on them to get to the end of the month. See how to build a budget.
