In Spain salaries are negotiated as yearly gross, but what pays your bills is the monthly net. It pays to handle both figures.
Turn every offer into net
Before an interview, work out the net you need and convert it to gross. For example, in Cataluña:
- €35,000 gross leaves €26,317 net a year.
- €40,000 gross leaves €29,464.
- €45,000 gross leaves €32,386.
A €5,000 gross difference is not €5,000 more in your account. See how much of a pay rise reaches your pocket.
Compare offers like for like
- 12 or 14 payments: "€2,500 a month" means different things in each. See 12 or 14 payments.
- Region: an offer in another region can leave more or less net on the same gross. Compare in which region charges the least IRPF.
- Employee or autónomo: if you are asked to invoice, you need quite a bit more gross to match the net. See autónomo or employee.
Beyond salary
Flexible pay (health insurance, meal vouchers, transport) can have tax advantages. And remote work, working hours or training have value too.
Work out the net of each offer in the calculator or see the table for €40,000 gross by region.
