Your contract type changes your yearly net salary very little, but there are differences worth knowing.
Unemployment contribution
On a permanent contract (indefinido) you contribute 1.55% for unemployment. On a temporary one (temporal), 1.6%. Just 0.05 points more: on €25,000 gross, about €12.50 a year.
In total, a temporary worker contributes 6.55% instead of 6.5%. See what Social Security takes for the details.
Minimum 2% withholding
On contracts shorter than a year, your employer must withhold at least 2% IRPF, even if your salary would call for less. It is not an extra tax: if too much was withheld by the end of the year, it is refunded in the renta.
What does not change
- The IRPF rules: brackets, allowances and reductions are the same.
- The yearly net, apart from that small contribution difference.
On €25,000 gross in Cataluña with a permanent contract, the net is €19,844 a year.
Other differences that do matter
Beyond the net, a temporary contract gives you severance pay when it ends, and usually less stability when applying for a loan or a rental. Weigh the whole offer.
